2011 RIBA Stirling Prize Awards
04 Nov 2011
Since joining Garran Lockers as MD, Paul Formby and his team have placed great emphasis on working with architects and specifiers involved in major new building construction and refurbishment projects. Having enjoyed considerable success particularly in the education, sport, and leisure sectors, Garran were delighted to attend the RIBA Stirling Prize Awards Dinner and congratulated Zaha Hadid Architects on winning the prestigious Stirling Prize for the second year running. The event was also broadcasted on BBC2’s Culture Show.
The Evelyn Grace Academy in Brixton designed by Zaha Hadid Architects is the first school to win the £20,000 Stirling Prize beating the favourite the London 2012 Olympic Velodrome. The prize is awarded to the best new European building that has been built or designed in Britain.
RIBA President Angela Brady, who chaired the judging panel, described the £38m academy as a "highly stylized zig-zag of steel and glass" and praised its “imaginative” design.
With a relatively small location and sport as one of the academy's "special subjects", the architects had to face a similar challenge to that faced by many of Garrans’ clients in the education sector – maximise the use of space for the benefit of learning and sports education, combining innovative design with functionality.
Garran Lockers have a vast experience of working with architects and contractors having delivered innovative and practical solutions to over 500 primary and secondary schools, academies, higher education colleges and universities. Garran Lockers have built very specific and highly customised bespoke storage solutions meeting each projects’ exact needs.
